Origin

While Rowdy has always had ownership of the servers, the original intention was that they be apart of the Babyfur Gamers group on steam. The server grew in popularity and began attracting outsiders. When disagreements regarding punishments and a culture clash between babyfurs and non-babyfurs began, Rowdy decided to relaunch the server under a new community, taking on a leadership role in addition to a technical one. Thus, SouthernCross gaming was formed.

The group is named after the constellation, as the constellation's nickname, Crux, was Rowdy's fursona species at the time. Additionally, Rowdy felt the name wasn't too "furry" and would help avoid attacks from trolls, which happened often under the BFG. SCG started with only one Team Fortress 2 server, closely resembling what Rainbow Swirl is today.

History

BFG Era (2010 - 2010)

The BFG era was a period of time before SCG when the server was run for the Babyfur Gamers group on Steam. The first ever server was quietly launched on June 19th, 2010 in the form of a group post to the BFG group. It quickly developed a player base over the next few months which eventually consisted of non-babyfurs who didn't mind the community.

This era concluded at the end of November of the same year, when the server was relaunched under the newly formed SouthernCross gaming steam group.

Era 1 (2010 - 2012)

The original server was first hosted by a company called XFactorServers until February 5th, 2011, until it was moved to now defunct company, DarkStarLLC. XFactorServers would continue to be used for assorted servers (Monday Night Combat, Halo, etc) until their merger with the company Fragnet around March 12th, 2012.

On August 12th, 2012, following a TF2 update, it was discovered that SCG could no longer upload .DLL files to their DarkStar server instance, which was a requirement for manually updating Sourcemod, and would later become a requirement for more intricate server mods. Rowdy then moved to a reseller network by the name QubeGaming and would remain there until the end of Era 2.

Notable events

  • August 2011 : Because of the overwhelming number of game modes featured on the server and a demand that community game modes be played less in favor of stock modes, the servers are split. Chocolate is created to focus on community game modes, and the original server is officially titled Vanilla to house only stock vanilla modes.
  • Unknown, 2012 - Strawberry is created as a 24/7 Saxton Hale server to help separate it from Rainbow Swirl
  • August 15, 2012 - MVM is released, with it comes the server.

Era 2 (2012 - 2013)

The duration of era 2 consisted of SCG's time at QubeGaming, which as a result of exponetially increasing server bills, forced Rowdy to seek a new host or consider closing the servers entirely. A new host was found, with a great location and a much more managable price, but came with a new caveat. This host was a colocated server and featured no hosting tools whatsoever.

Notable events

  • March 17th, 2012 - The Vanilla server becomes the server, and the Chocolate server becomes what is now known as
  • March 22nd, 2012 - The server is re-created as a pure vanilla, competitive focused server. It featured a vanilla loadout, team only voice chat, and a limited map selection.
  • November 16th, 2012 - The original implementation of the loyalty store is launched.

Era 3 (2013 - 2018)

In the span of a single evening, Rowdy taught himself how to use Linux, how to transfer the servers onto the new machine, and how to secure them. With a powerful new server, a much cheaper cost of hosting, and a new sense of direction, SCG would continue to exist safely for years to come. It was during this time that Rowdy began to better himself, his skills, and the community overall.

Era 4 (2018 - )

The return of to the community came with numerous improvements to SCG. Fraeven's expertise as a software engineer brought new perspective to fixing existing problems. Previously an Admin during Era 1, he was brought back into an administration role, and eventually saw himself working alongside Rowdy. Together, they would fix more plugins, invent solutions to odd problems, modify game-modes, create tools, and more.
